Biomechanics and Injury Causation

At Bloomberg Consulting we have experts in the areas of biomechanics and injury causation who have extensive training and experience in engineering, orthopedics, radiology, and the analysis of medical records and anatomical imaging.  Our biomechanics experts perform analyses associated with vehicle accidents, product liability cases, and slip and fall cases to determine if the injuries are consistent with the event in question.

Within the field of accident reconstruction, biomechanics is the study of how physical forces affect the human body, including their effects on bones, muscles, tissues and tendons.  Biomechanics applies the principles of mechanical engineering and the scientific method to the analysis of factual data.  The factual data sources for a biomechanical analysis include medical records, anatomical/physiological imaging films, accident scene and accident vehicle inspections, accident reconstruction results, EDR data, computer modeling, and available crash test data.

Our experts do not diagnose injuries, they determine if the diagnosed injury and its severity are consistent with the accident event. They compare the forces experienced in the event to those required to cause the diagnosed injury on the human body.

In motor vehicle accidents, a biomechanical analysis can assist in determining issues related to the use and performance of seat belts, airbags, and child restraint seats, as well as the seating positions of occupants and who was driving.   A thorough biomechanical analysis can also determine if factors could have lessened or eliminated the purported injury.
